Frequently Asked Questions
The answers to the most common Search Engine Optimisation, Submission and Site Promotion questions can be found below...
What is "Search Engine Submission"?
Submitting your web site to a search engine means that you have, essentially, sent a request to them asking that they include your site in their directory of internet links. This does NOT mean that you are guaranteed to be listed, or that you will be ranked high in the listings, simply that you have alerted the Search Engines that you exist and are inviting the engine to see if it fits their criteria for listing. Search engine submission is one of the services Get Me Hits offers and you can find out more about this on our packages section here.
Why submit my site to search engines?
Eventually, your site may be picked up by search engines naturally - however the procedure is slow and something over which you have no real control. To speed things up, most search engines allow you to submit your site directly.

Studies have shown that a large amount of web site traffic (approximately 80%) reach web sites via search engines and directories. When searching, most people will not explore below the third or fourth page of a search engine's results page - so If your site is not listed on these engines, or if your listing is too low down, then a large number of people may not even realise your site exists!

By submitting yourself properly to search engines you are increasing your chances of grabbing the attention of these potential visitors and inviting them to visit your web site.

Note that most of the time, when we say "submitting a site to a search engine" we do not mean that you will automatically find yourself included in that engine's database. All you have done is requested that they CONSIDER you for inclusion. The better optimised and prepared your site is, the better your chances that the engines will agree to rank you high in their listings.
What is "Search Engine Optimisation"?
This means either altering your existing web site, or (creating a whole new web site) so that it is designed to offer you the best possible chance of getting a high ranking in any search engine you are submitted to, based on the key words and phrases you are particularly interested in targeting.

This can include such things as adding suitable "meta-tag" information, removing problematic HTML code such as Framesets and unnecessary Javascript or making alterations to the visible text content on specific areas of your site. Optimisation of your web site is one of the services that Get Me Hits can offer you. Go here to find out more.
Why bother with Optimisation?
All search engines follow their own sets of rules to determine which web sites are most suitable for inclusion in their database. The details and formulas behind this are kept a closely guarded secret by the search engine administrators, however there are many well known techniques that the majority of engines recognise (see help and advice for more details on this).

If you ignore these rules, or if you implement them badly, then even if you request to be submitted to a particular search engine you may not receive a useful ranking. Worse still, there is a chance you will be dismissed completely.
Why should I use Get Me Hits?
We have been performing search engine optimisation and submissions on web sites for many years, to great success. many of the sites we have designed and optimised can be found on our sister site at www.invernessonline.com.
What services do you offer?
At Get Me Hits we can offer you a variety of products and services designed to aid your web site in improving it's search engine ranking and increasing the number of visitors to your web site. This can be as simple as a detailed report outlining problems we identify with your current web site up to a complete optimisation of specific sections of your site. We are also able to submit your site to a specially selected range of the most popular search engines available.
Where would you submit my site?
While there is only a small number of "important" search engines, it's not enough to be listed on just them. Engines favour sites who have lots of sites linking to them and so the more search engines, directories and guides you appear on the better (even though you should only really expect visitors from the top ten).

We have put together a collection of the most popular and relevant engines which we will submit your site to. These include search engines such as Google, AltaVista and Yahoo as well as directories such as Dmoz - The Open Source Directory along with a whole host of others to increase your link relevancy.
Why don't you submit to [specific engine]?
Many of the more popular engines have in recent years changed their available services so that in order to be included in their database you are expected to pay a rather hefty one-off, monthly or annual fee (or some manner of "pay-per-click" scheme), in exchange for quick, almost instantaneous inclusion in "sponsored links" or other similar sections. (Examples would be the Lycos Network, Webcrawler and Ask Jeeves, to name but a few).

If you have the money to burn, these may be worth considering. However it is still very possible to obtain a high rate of traffic to your web site using the popular engines we submit to (such as google - still one of the most popular search engines available) which do not have any hidden charges for getting listed. In fact, many people who use search engines will choose "normal" listings just as often as they would pick a site from any "sponsored" links.

If you do wish to run a sponsored or "pay per click" scheme then we are happy to advise.
How much will your services cost me?
We have a selection of different packages available depending on the level of help you require with your search engine optimisation. You can find out more details about each package here.
How long does your the site submission process take?
Optimising your web site and preparing it for a search engine submission would take no longer than 24-48 hours, depending on the amount of work involved in preparing your web site. Submission of your site to the search engines would then take place, which would take a matter of hours.

Then it is all in the hands of the search engines. It is important to realise that search engines will have set specific dates in which they update their database contents and nothing will happen with your site until they do this. Essentially we recommend that you allow anything up to eight to ten weeks for the engines to have accepted your request for site for ranking.

Please note that, as mentioned above, they engine is only CONSIDERING you for inclusion at this point, although our optimisation process will give you the best possible chance of being included and at a reasonably high ranking under your main targeted keywords.
Is there anything I can do to prepare my site before you work on it?
The most important thing you can do is give us an idea of the sort of words and short phrases you are wanting to target in search engines. This should be balanced so that it is neither too vague (resulting in too many search engine results to be of any use) or too specific (which people are unlikely to know to type).

Space is provided in our order form for you to include as much information about this as you like.

In order to make any changes to your site we will also require access to the web space to retrieve your files. To speed up this process it would be beneficial for you to have your FTP details to hand.
Do you use any "sneaky" or unethical optimisation tactics?
Absolutely Not.

We take every effort to avoid using some of the more underhand tactics available when optimising your web site. These include such things as Alt Tag Stuffing, Doorway pages, Misleading Content, Unnecessary Redirection, Hidden text, Overuse of comment tags, Over-filled Meta Tags and duplication of content, among others. Use of any of these techniques can result in your web site being "banned".
After all that I'm still not happy with the results. What now!
If for any reason you are not happy with our service we are able to offer a complete refund.
